The Spirit of GEWR: Women Who Run Together

The Spirit of GEWR: Women Who Run Together

There’s something electric about race day. The thrum of excitement, the shared adrenaline,
and the unspoken connection among runners. But for the women of the Great Eastern
Women’s Run (GEWR), it’s about more than just crossing the finish line. It’s about
community, courage, and celebrating every stride together.

More Than a Race—It’s a Movement!

GEWR isn’t just Singapore’s largest all-women’s run. It holds the title of Southeast Asia’s
longest-running women-only race, empowering thousands of women since 2006. From
career women squeezing in training after work to mothers jogging with strollers, every
woman’s story converges on this iconic starting line. Whether it’s an elite runner chasing a
personal best or a first-timer simply aiming to finish strong, every woman gets celebrated
equally.
The event’s diverse categories, like the uplifting 2KM Mummy + Me Run, promote bonding
between mothers and daughters proving that running isn’t just a solo sport; it’s a shared
legacy. In past GEWR editions, women from all walks of life and different nationalities
including Japan, Taiwan, Philippines, Sri Lanka, and even North Korea have participated,
showcasing the event’s unique ability to unite women from diverse backgrounds and
cultures.

Why Women Run Together?

In a world that often pits women against one another, events like GEWR offer something
rare: sisterhood and solidarity. Here, it’s not about competition. It’s about cheering each
other on, lifting each other up, and celebrating every woman’s personal journey. In recent
years, the oldest participant was over 70 years old, proving that courage knows no age limit.
Many women also run as part of workplace teams, school groups, or community clubs
turning the event into a vibrant, colourful celebration of friendship and teamwork.

Inspiring the Next Generation

Some of the most powerful scenes at GEWR involve mothers, aunts, and older sisters
running alongside young girls, passing down the spirit of self-belief and resilience. The
beloved 100M Princess Dash, designed for girls aged 3 to 6, ignites this passion for wellness
early. These moments aren’t just adorable photo ops. They are powerful symbols of visibility
and empowerment. When young girls witness women running boldly and proudly, they
begin to believe, “I can do this too.”

Beyond the Finish Line

Beyond medals or race results, GEWR runners carry something greater which is a shared
sense of purpose. Many participants run to raise funds for women’s causes, health

initiatives, and community programs, proving that running can be a force for good. Every
step here is a story of determination. Every cheer is an act of empowerment. And every
finish line crossed sends a message: When women run together, they don’t just go far, they go further, together.
And the numbers speak for themselves. GEWR consistently draws huge crowds. In 2024,
more than 12,000 women took part, making it Singapore’s largest all-women’s race that
year and the numbers keep growing, year after year. Because here, every step tells a story
and together, we create something unstoppable.

Looking Ahead to GEWR 2025

As the countdown begins for the Great Eastern Women’s Run 2025, excitement is already
building. Whether you’re aiming for a new personal record, looking to bond with your
daughter at the Mummy + Me Run, or simply eager to soak in the vibrant atmosphere,
GEWR 2025 promises to be another unforgettable celebration of strength, unity, and
sisterhood.
